Dress Code

Washington Academic Middle School follows the established rules set forth in the standard District Dress Code Policy, as stated in the District portion of the Parent and Student Handbook. All students are expected to adhere to dress code while on campus and for school events. Students found out of compliance with the dress code are subjected to the following progressive steps and will not be allowed back into class until student is in compliance with the dress code.

A. First Referral – The student will receive a documented warning, he/she will be expected to change into appropriate clothing, the parents will be notified, and the dress code will be reviewed with the student.
B. Second Referral – In addition to the above, the student will also receive two (2) lunch detentions.
C. Third Referral – In addition to A, the student will receive one (1) after school detention.
D. Fourth Referral – In addition to A, the student will receive one (1) Saturday school, and both parent/guardian and student will sign a contract.
E. Fifth Referral – The student will receive a suspension and will be referred to the discipline panel.

The dress code in its entirety may be found in the Sanger Unified Section of the Handbook (Board Policy 5132). The following are just a few of the major areas addressed commonly at WAMS:

ACCESSORIES
Flags, blankets, bandanas, or other non-clothing accessories are not permitted on WAMS campus.

HAIR
Faux-hawks of extreme nature are not permitted. This includes faux-hawks where the pupil’s head is shaved on the side and the scalp is visible and any faux-hawk that rises above the pupil’s scalp by more than 2 inches. Unusual designs, symbols, or razor cuts in hair and eyebrows are not permitted. In addition, hair must be a naturally occurring color and not a distraction to learning.

PIERCINGS
Students may not have piercings any place other than the ears.

SHORTS/SKIRTS/PANTS/SIZE/RIPPED JEANS
Shorts for girls may be no shorter than 6” from the knee; boys must wear both pants and shorts at the natural waist line. Any see through clothing or clothes that expose the body in a sexually suggestive manner are not acceptable. Jeans that are ripped will be treated like shorts; the torn area may not be more than 6” above the knee. Jeans that are ripped, but have a backing not of a skin tone color are permitted. Form-fitting or lycra/spandex shorts and pants are not permitted.

SPORTS LOGOS AND HEADWEAR
Clothing of professional teams with or without logos are unacceptable. Note: Apparel with bulldog insignia of any kind is not acceptable with the exception of the Wilson Elementary School mascot. No headwear allowed except for school -sanctioned hats. Hats and hoods are not permitted to be worn in the classroom or school facilities.
